If you are preaching on Sunday, I implore you to remember that one in four women has had a miscarriage. Others may have experienced a stillbirth or the loss of a child at a later age. Some may have experienced a prospective adoption falling through, or have struggled with infertility. Some might have a child in prison or foster care or a child who is estranged.
Some may have lost their mother, have had an abusive or neglectful mother, or have been disowned by their parents. Some may be estranged from their mother. Some may have two fathers or been raised by a single father.
If you’re going to bring up Mother’s Day at all… TREAD LIGHTLY.
You will do more harm than good by singling out the mothers, harping on how wonderful moms are, or otherwise making a big deal about it.
Stick to the lectionary, stick to the liturgy, and let the greeting card companies and the florists handle Mother’s Day. It’s their holiday, anyway.
